Rug Guides

Everything you need to choose, place, and care for the perfect rug — no tabs, no fuss. Use the sections below or jump to our dedicated guides for sizing and materials.

Size Guide

The right rug size defines your space and ties furniture together. Too small and the room feels unfinished; too large and it overwhelms the layout.

  • Living room: 8×10 ft for medium rooms; 9×12 ft for larger layouts. Front legs of all seating on the rug is the most versatile rule.
  • Bedroom: 8×10 ft under a queen bed; runners (2×6 ft or 2×8 ft) flanking a king bed.
  • Dining: Add 24–30 in. beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
  • Hallway: Runners should leave equal floor visible at each end — typically 2×6 ft to 2×10 ft.

Help Me Choose

Not sure where to start? Answer these three questions:

  1. Where will it go? High-traffic entryways need durable fibers (wool, sisal, nylon). Bedrooms call for softer piles.
  2. What is the mood? Neutral tones ground a room; bold patterns become the focal point.
  3. What size is your furniture? Measure your seating or dining grouping first, then add 6–12 in. on each side.

Materials

Material affects feel, durability, and care. Here is a quick overview:

  • Wool — Soft, durable, naturally stain-resistant. Our most popular choice for living areas.
  • Cotton & jute — Lightweight and casual; great for layered looks and low-traffic spots.
  • Synthetics (nylon, polypropylene) — Budget-friendly, easy to clean, good for kids and pets.
  • Silk & art silk — Luxurious sheen; best in lower-traffic rooms or as accent pieces.

Use & Care

Everyday care

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting — avoid beater bars on delicate or high-pile rugs.
  • Rotate every 3–6 months to even out wear and sun fading.
  • Use a rug pad to prevent slipping, add cushioning, and extend rug life.
  • Blot spills immediately — never rub. Use cold water and mild detergent for most stains.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional cleaning is recommended every 12–18 months for wool and silk rugs.
  • Some cotton and synthetic rugs can be gently hand-washed — check the product label first.
  • Keep rugs out of direct sunlight to preserve color.
